8: Hellenic Greece

Overview:

This is the exciting period that ushered in the Golden Age of Greek civilization. Pay close attention to the successive reforms of Draco, Solon, Pisastratos and Kleisthenes which lay the foundation for democracy as we know it today. The Greek victory over the invading Persians had ramifications far beyond its military success.  

Questions:

a. What were the "demes" organized by Cleisthenes and why are they so important to the development of western government and personal freedom?

b. Why was the Greek victory at Marathon so important?
