LM 1010: Information Literacy is a 1 credit online course.  This course will introduce you to the techniques and tools that you can use to do effective library research for all your information needs - in the classroom, the workplace, and in everyday life.

It is our hope that students completing this course will be able to use an academic library to successfully identify, access, evaluate, and use information resources to support academic success and lifelong learning. Completion of this course meets the core information literacy general education requirement.

Textbook: This course uses an online textbook, available on the course home page by clicking the Learning Modules button.

Program fees: The Sherratt Library courses have a $8 per credit hour fee to be used for support or improvement of library media courses.

How to Complete the Course

Click the Learning Modules button on the course Home Page to access all course materials:

  1. Pre-Test (2 points) - You need to do the Pre-Test to be able to access the rest of the course (Quizzess, Assignments, and Exams). The Pre-Test is worth a possible 2 points and will be added to your total score if you complete the Quizzes, Assignments, and Final Exam. The Pre-Test score will not be added to your Test-Out Exam score.
  2. Syllabus - Check the course syllabus for course information, deadlines, and grading.
  3. Online Textbook
    1. Topics. The online textbook includes 10 topics which go through the basics of doing college level research - from selecting a topic, finding information on your topic, choosing the most reliable sources, to giving credit to your sources.
    2. Quizzes (40% of your grade). In the Online Textbook you'll find 4 Quizzes (assessments). Each quiz can be taken two times - the highest score will be your grade for that quiz.
    3. Assignments (40% of your grade). The Online Textbook includes 2 Assignments worth 20 points each.
    4. Final Exam (20% of your grade). You can take the Final Exam after you've completed all the Quizzes and Assignments. In the Learning Modules click Exam Reviews where you'll find a practice exam and information on how to prepare for and take the exam. When you're ready to take the exam come to the library at the times shown above.
  4. Test-Out Exam. You should take the Test-Out Exam if you are familiar with the course material. Go to Learning Modules and click Test-Out Exam where you'll find information on how to prepare for the exam and a practice exam.
    1. If you pass the Test-Out Exam with a grade of at least a C-, and accept your grade, you will have completed the course and do not need to do any more work in the course.
    2. If you don't pass the Test-Out Exam with at least a C- grade or you're not satisfied with your Test-Out score, continue and complete the course. Your instructor will add 2 points to your total course score for taking the Test-Out Exam.

Course Schedule and Deadlines

LM1010 classes will meet on the scheduled day/time for Weeks 1 and 2 in Library Room 002. The course content is online so you will be able to complete the class on your own after the first meetings. Since this class is only 8 weeks long you should begin working on the readings, assignments, and quizzes right away!

Important notices:

  • Although you can complete the Quizzes and Assignments and then take the Final Exam at your own pace, if you follow the schedule below you will easily complete the course in time.
  • The Test-Out Exam is available ONLY during the third week, September 8-11. The exam must be taken in the library. Show a picture ID to the librarian who will enter the password for the exam.
  • The last day to take the Final Exam is Wednesday, October 14. The exam must be taken in the library. Show a picture ID to the librarian who will enter the password for the exam.

  • Friday, September 1: Test-Out Exam available in library, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

You must earn a minimum passing grade of a C- to pass this course and meet the SUU core information literacy General Education requirement.

Course grades are calculated as follows:

A = 93 - 100
A- = 90 - 92
B+ = 87 - 89
B = 83 - 86
B- = 80 - 82
C+ = 77 - 79
C = 73 - 76
C- = 70 - 72
D+ = 67 - 69
D = 63 - 66
D- = 60 - 62
F = 59 and below

Your grade in LM1010 is determined by points you earn on 4 Quizzes + 2 Assignments + the Final Exam:
