Library Collections: Descriptions



Curriculum Collection

The Curriculum Collection contains curriculum material appropriate for grades K-12, including text books.

Located on the Third Level.


Electronic Databases

These databases include information from periodicals, newspapers, and reference sources. They are available online on our database search. Most of the databases are limited in use to the university community. Special Collections also has some digital collections.

Electronic Reserve

The Electronic Reserve includes copies of articles, required readings, and professor's notes. Many courses at SUU use this reserve for students to access readings and resources required for the courses. Limited to students enrolled in courses.

Government Document Collection

This collection contains copies of government documents.


Juvenile Collection

This collection contains fiction and non-fiction books for children.

Located on the Third Level.


Main Collection

This collection contains over 180,000 volumes. Books are arranged using the Library of Congress Classification System where books on one subject are shelved together. Each subject is assigned a one or two letter code, then numbers are used to further subdivide the subject. Call numbers for books can be found by searching the SUU Library Online Electronic Catalog.

Media Collection

Computer programs, video tapes, recordings, pictures, charts, maps, kits, transparencies, posters, books on tape, classical music CD-ROM's, and models are all located in Media Collections. Materials from the Media Collection may be checked out for two weeks, and can be returned to this area or upstairs to the circulation desk.

Oversize Collection

This collection contains books that are physically too large to be shelved in the main collection.

Reference Collection

This collection contains materials such as encyclopedias, almanacs, directories, and dictionaries to help you with your library research.

Located on the Main Level.


Special Collections

The home for out-of-print, rare, and expensive materials that need special handling. The primary areas of collation are Paiute Indians, Utah authors, Shakespeare, music, Southern Utah history, and maps.

Serials Collection

The Serials Collection contains magazines, newspapers, journals, and newsletters. Current and past issues of serials are arranged on the shelves alphabetically by title. The SUU Serials Holdings List is a book listing all issues of serials held by the SUU Library. Copies of this book are available in the Reference area.
